Some of my earliest memories of true crime are watching it with my mother snuggled up in our living room. Years later, I studied journalism and began paying much closer attention to the stories making the news, and eventually, the ones that weren’t.

I kept seeing innocent women being beaten, abused, and murdered. Sometimes by men they trusted, sometimes by complete strangers. Mothers. Pregnant women. Young women graduating, building careers, and beginning their lives. Some were even making a fresh start with their children.

At the same time, families were fighting to keep their missing or murdered loved ones’ names in the public eye, while countless cases received little to no media coverage.

I couldn’t stop asking myself: Why does this keep happening, and why aren’t we hearing about all of them?
